South Carolina hopes defense can still lead the way
The Gamecocks have lost to two of the top programs in the SEC in Georgia and Kentucky and the offense struggled in both games, scoring 13 and 10 points respectively in the two games. The offense is scoring 22.4 points per game and is led by a run game that has four running back with over 100 rushing yards with ZaQuandre White, Kevin Harris, Juju McDowell, and Marshawn Lloyd combining for 663 rushing yards on the season. In the passing game, Luke Doty and Zeb Noland have split snaps under center with both quarterbacks failing to complete over 60 percent of passes but Josh Vann has emerged as the number one receiver with 332 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
While the offense has struggled at times, the defense has led the way, allowing only 17.4 points per game. Cam Smith has five passes defended while Foster is adding four interceptions as part of a pass defense that is allowing only 155 passing yards per game.
Tennessee's offense has been dominant this season
The Volunteers are off to a 3-2 start to the season and the reason for their success has been their potent offense which is scoring 40.8 points per game. Quarterback Hendon Hooker is having a great season, completing 68.5 percent of passes for 838 yards and 10 touchdowns while Velus Jones Jr. and JaVonta Payton have emerged as the top pass catchers with 417 combined receiving yards and five touchdowns but the run game has been incredible this season. Running back Tiyon Evans and Jabari Small have combined for 594 rushing yards and seven touchdowns while Hendon Hooker is also adding 213 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.
The offense has led the way but the defense has also stepped up, allowing only 21.8 runs per game. Linebackers Jeremy Banks and Aaron Beasley have combined for 47 tackles to limit big plays at the second level of the defense but the defensive backs have led the way for the Volunteers. Theo Jackson and Trevon Flowers have combined for 64 tackles while Jackson also has five passes defended. In addition, Jaylen McCollough has two interceptions and three passes defended as part of a Volunteer defense that limits passing lanes.
