SMU vs Tulane Prediction & Preview

Tulane has lost four straight and the Green Wave have fallen to 1-5 overall and have a 0-2 record in the American Athletic Conference. Tulane's most recent loss was 40-22 to the Houston Cougars on Thursday October 7. Tulane gave up 435 yards of total offense to Houston and the Green Wave managed to gain just 308 yards of total offense. Tulane wide receiver Mykel Jones is out.

SMU is the polar opposite of Tulane as the Mustangs have opened the season with six consecutive victories and are 2-0 in the American Athletic Conference. SMU’s most recent victory was 31-24 over the Navy Midshipmen on Saturday. SMU quarterback Tanner Mordecai threw for 324 yards with a pair of touchdown passes and one interception as the Mustangs gained 404 yards of total offense. SMU's defense held Navy to 241 yards of total offense. SMU running back TJ McDaniel is out indefinitely.


Tulane defense is one of the country's worst

Tulane is fourth from the bottom or 127th in the nation in points allowed as the Green Wave is allowing an average of 40.2 points per game. Tulane allows an average of 475.2 yards of total offense to opponents that includes 198.0 yards rushing and 277.2 yards passing per game. Opponents average 4.7 yards per carry and 6.3 yards per play against Tulane's defense. Safety Macon Clark has 40 tackles to lead Tulane, while lineman Jojo Dorceus and defensive end Noah Seiden each have 2.5 quarterback sacks. Five different players have one interception each for Tulane.



Tulane's offense cannot keep pace with what the defense is giving up although the Green Wave is scoring an average of 33.2 points per game. Tulane averages 140.2 yards rushing and 258.5 yards passing per game. Quarterback Michael Pratt has completed 60.0% of his passes for 1364 yards, 13 touchdowns and five interceptions. Cameron Carroll has a team-high 272 yards rushing with a pair of touchdowns and tight end Tyrick James has a team-best 343 yards receiving and 3 touchdowns. 

SMU Offense is Key to Mustangs Success

SMU is 21st in the nation in scoring with an average of 40.7 points per game. The Mustangs are 37th in rushing with an average of 195.2 yards per game and 14th in passing with an average of 315.8 yards per game. Quarterback Tanner Mordecai has completed 71.0% of his passes for 1893 yards, 26 touchdowns and seven interceptions. On the ground, Ulysses Bentley IV is the leading rusher with 405 yards and two touchdowns and wide receiver Danny Gray leads all receivers with 469 yards and seven touchdowns.


SMU is 47th in the nation in points allowed with an average of 22.2 per game. The Mustangs are allowing an average of 390.7 yards per game including 138.8 yards rushing and 251.8 yards per game passing. Opponents are averaging 3.8 yards per carry and 5.7 yards per play against the SMU defense. The Mustangs defense is led by linebacker Shaine Hailey, who has a team-best 37 tackles. The leader in quarterback sacks with 4.0 is defensive end Gary Wiley and the leader in interceptions with 2 is safety Isaiah Nwokobia.
