The Arizona Diamondbacks battle the San Diego Padres on Tuesday night in the middle game of a three-game set at Petco Park. San Diego captured the opener 4-1 behind seven masterful innings from Yu Darvish and home runs from Trent Grisham and Jake Cronenworth. The Padres enter this game in a virtual tie with the Dodgers in the NL West, while Arizona is 10 games back. The Diamondbacks will send ace Zac Gallen to the hill in this one. He will take on Sean Manaea for the Padres. First pitch is at 9:40 PM EST.

Diamondbacks Holding Their Own

Arizona entered 2022 off a dreadful 110-loss campaign a season ago. Many experts had the club pegged for a similar fate this year especially considering the daunting NL West division they belong to. Through close to 70 games the D-backs have surpassed their low expectations and managed to hang around the .500 mark. They are well out of the division race but far from the lay-up many predicted they would be. Arizona has the 23rd-ranked scoring offense averaging 4.1 runs per game. They have struggled to generate consistent base traffic with a team OBP of just .297 (25th). The Diamondbacks offense never got going in game 1, producing just five hits and one run in a 4-1 loss.

Zac Gallen is stringing together an impressive season in his return from injury entering Tuesday with a 4-2 record and 2.91 ERA. He delivered a nice showing his last time out against a dreadful Reds team hurling seven innings of two-run ball while yielding just two hits and striking out five. Gallen has anchored a staff that ranks 22nd overall with a 4.24 team ERA.

Padres Look to Keep Train Rolling

San Diego has been among the most impressive teams in the National League thus far. After losing their franchise cornerstone Fernando Tatis Jr. prior to the season, not many predicted they could go toe-to-toe with the Dodgers, but they have done just that to this point. The Padres boast the 8th best scoring offense in baseball averaging 4.7 runs per game. They are currently posting a solid .320 team OBP which ranks 9th, Manny Machado has been spectacular leading the team with a .328 batting average, 12 home runs, and 46 RBIs. However, Machado will miss time due to an ankle injury suffered on Saturday. On Monday night, the Padres rode the right arm of Yu Darvish to a 4-1 victory. Darvish went 7 innings and allowed just 1 run on 4 hits earning his 7th win of the season.

Sean Manaea has been up and down in 2022, entering the action with a 3-3 mark and a 3.95 ERA across 12 starts. He is coming off a rough outing against the Cubs in his last start surrendering five runs on eight hits in just four short innings. Padres pitching has been among the best in baseball with the club posting a 3.48 team ERA which ranks inside the top five in the league.
