Detroit and Oakland will be the back-half of an NFL preseason doubleheader on Friday night at Oakland Coliseum. Neither of these teams have a significant history between each other, meeting in just six regular season games since 1990.

Expect to see a lot of backup Rudock in these preseason games

Detroit technically had a successful 2017 campaign, finishing with a 9-7 record and second the NFC North, but didn’t qualify for the postseason. They’re hoping to take the next step with a new head coach after firing Jim Caldwell. With an aging Matt Stafford at quarterback, expect him to play less and less and these games, and get ready for a lot of backup Jake Rudock.
Rudock completed 37-of-56 passes last preseason, tallying up 380 total yards with three touchdowns and one pick. He was only sacked twice throughout all his action, and he saw the bulk of his work in the first preseason game against the Colts. The defense has been looking good according to training camp reports, which is inspiring after the woes they suffered last season.

How will the Raiders look under Gruden’s second stint?

Oakland fizzled down the stretch last season, dropping their last four games in December and finishing with a 6-10 record. Like Detroit, the head coach was ousted and there’s a lot of focus on Jon Gruden, who makes a long awaited return to the sidelines. This will be Gruden’s second stint with the team — prior to this, he made the Raiders a Super Bowl contender, and ended up beating them in his first season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after leaving them.
Another big offseason headline is star defensive back Khalil Mack, who is holding out of training camp while waiting on a new contract. The good news is quarterback Derek Carr is still in contact with him and it doesn’t look to be a locker room issue, though the coaching staff is a little annoyed at the situation.
