I love bowl season, but what I love even more is when two good teams square off in a bowl game. The Orange Bowl usually provides a pretty solid game each year, and I think this one will be a great one with A&M and UNC facing off. Both of these teams have had injury problems this year, but there is nothing new for this one, so we will see the same teams we have been for the past few weeks.
Texas A&M Will Need Their Defense to Play Great in This OneTexas A&M has had a great year this season compared to the last few. In fact, this is the best Texas A&M has been in almost a decade, in my opinion. I am curious how good A&M actually is, though. This has been a strange year with COVID-19 canceling games and having players sit, and if we are honest, the SEC has had one of their worst years as a conference in recent memory. All in all, I think this matchup will give A&M a solid matchup and a chance to prove that they deserve their number five ranking. A&M’s offense currently scores 31.67 PPG (44th) while averaging 234.33 YPG through the air (60th) and 202.89 YPG on the ground (27th).
Texas A&M’s offense has been solid this year, but their defense has been the best I have seen it in years. They have really stepped up their play this year, and they will need to play 100% if they hope to slow UNC. A&M’s defense is currently holding opponents to just 21.11 PPG (27th) while allowing 224.33 YPG through the air (57th) and only 92.22 YPG on the ground (7th).
North Carolina Will Rely on Their Red-Hot Offense to Win This OneI have been so impressed with UNC this year that they have always seemed to be on the cusp of breaking out for the past few years, but a few losses always set them back. While they still had a few losses this season, I really think they made a solid jump as a program and will look to come back next season even stronger. UNC’s offense has been a major reason for their performance this season as they have been red hot. This offense is scoring a wild 43.0 PPG (7th) while averaging 307.55 YPG through the air (19th) and 249.09 YPG on the ground (9th). This is a solid, balanced offense, and I think they will be able to give A&M’s defense trouble.
UNC’s defense this year has been average, and at times it seems like they have really relied on the offense to win games. I actually think that their lack of defense has been the reason for their losses this season. If they hope to beat A&M and win the Orange Bowl, their defense will need to step up big in this one. UNC’s defense currently allows opponents to score 28.36 PPG (63rd) while allowing 248.0 passing YPG (86th) and 147.82 rushing YPG (50th).
The problem for the Heels in this bowl game is they won't have linebacker Chaz Surratt, wide receiver Dyami Brown, and running back Michael Carter who are skipping the bowl game to prepare for the NFL Draft. Carter ran for 1,245 yards with nine TDs this season.
