New York Rangers vs New York Islanders Prediction & Preview

The New York Islanders will take on the New York Rangers in an East Division battle. Both teams have a record of 4-4-2. These two teams have faced each other twice this season with each team winning a game.

Islanders Seek to Win Second Straight Game

The Islanders defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-3 on Saturday after an extended, unexpected break due to Covid. This was the first game they played since January 31. Jordan Eberle scored two goals and Michael Dal Colle had two assists in the game. Semyon Varlamov had a decent showing stopping 28 out of 31 shots he faced. The Islanders scored on their lone power play opportunity.


Offense has been a problem for the Isles this season. They rank 29th in goals per game, 21st in shots per game, 27th in shooting %, and 22nd in scoring efficiency ratio. Mathew Barzal leads the team with 11 points in 10 games. Before the Isles’ extended break, they were on a five game losing streak where they averaged only two goals per game.

Semyon Varlamov has been outstanding between the pipes this season. He has a 4-2-1 record with a 2.14 GAA and a .921 SV %. Varlamov is severely outplaying Ilya Sorokin who has a 0-2-1 record with a very poor 3.65 GAA and a .871 SV %. The Isles rank 11th in goals against per game, eighth in shots against per game, and 13th in shot differential per game. Special teams has been less than stellar ranking 18th in power play % and 21st in penalty kill %. The Isles have been strong in faceoffs, ranking third in faceoff win %. 

Rangers Look to Win Third Straight Game

The Rangers had their Saturday game postponed. Their last game played was on Thursday against the Washington Capitals. They were able to win the game 4-2. Artemi Panarin had three assists and Ryan Strome scored two goals. Igor Shesterkin was sharp in net stopping 31 out of 33 shots he faced.


Panarin has 15 points in 10 games on the season and leads the team in points. Other than Panarin’s hot start, the Rangers have been mediocre on offense. They rank 18th in goals per game, fourth in shots per game, 20th in shooting %, and 13th in scoring efficiency ratio. The offense has been trending in the right direction the last four games averaging 3.50 goals per game.

Igor Shesterkin has been outstanding in netm where has a 3-2-1 record with a 2.35 GAA and a .913 SV %. Alexander Georgiev is 1-2-1 with a 3.27 GAA and a .886 SV %. Shesterkin should see more playing time as he is outperforming Georgiev. The Rangers rank 11th in goals against per game, 10th in shots against per game, and sixth in shot differential. Power play needs improving with the Rangers ranking 22nd in power play % but penalty kill has been solid ranking 10th in the NHL.
