The Cardinals are on a tear and look to get the series sweep in this game facing a slumping Mets’ club.

The Cardinals have won four in a row and six of their last seven games. They are out of the NL Central race and are in the second NL Wild Card spot only a half a game up on the Cincinnati Reds and one game up on the San Diego Padres. St. Louis is led by their pitching staff and while they gave up six runs in their last game did not give up any in their previous two.

The Mets have lost two in a row and in their last nine games only have three wins. They have had a tough second half but are still in the playoff race 5.5 games out of first place in the NL East and four games out of the second Wild Card.

Seven Does it Again

In Game 2 of this series the Cardinals beat the Mets 7-6 in 11 innings and it was the second straight game they won scoring seven runs. In the last game they scored three runs in the 11th inning and Tyler O’Neil went yards and had three

O’Neil has gone yard three times with five RBI over his last seven games. Nolan Arenado (.254 31 HR 97 RBI) leads the birds in RBI and HR and he has gone yard twice with six RBI over his last four games. On the season St. Louis is 36-36 on the road.

Jon Lester (5-6 4.75 ERA 1.54 WHIP) goes for the Cardinals in this game and in his last start gave up two runs, on two solo HRs, in seven innings but did not get much help in a 4-2 loss to the Cincinnati Reds. The Cardinals have lost his last two starts where he only gave up three runs in 12 1/3 innings of work. They had won his previous four starts and in his last six starts he has given up more than two runs only once. Lester faced the Mets in June while still with the Washington Nationals and gave up two runs in six innings.

Not Like the Stats

Like the Cardinals the Mets are led by a pitching staff that ranks eighth in the Majors in runs scored but in their last four games they have given up 28 runs. In the last game Javier Baez had a HR and two RBI and Michael Conforto had two RBI. The Mets only rank 28th in baseball in runs scored. Alonso leads the team in batting average, HR, and RBI but has been in a slump as of late and had not had a hit in four games before going 1 for 5 in Game 2 of this series. Baez has three HR and seven RBI over his last eight games. On the season New York is 43-30 at home.

Tylor Megill (3-4 4.06 ERA 1.20 WHIP) gets the call for the Mets and in his last start gave up two runs on four hits in seven innings in a 10-3 win over the New York Yankees. To say he has been up and down as of late would be an understatement, as he has given up only two runs in two of his last three starts but has also given up at least four runs in two of his last four outings. This is Megill’s first start of the season facing the Mets.
