The Miami Dolphins play the New York Jets in an AFC East divisional matchup with both teams hoping to improve in the back half of the season. The Dolphins are 3-7 but 4-5-1 ATS while the Jets are 2-7 and have one of the worst records in the NFL. But teams are looking to make up ground in the division and the Wild Card race and the upcoming game should be a good one as a result.
Dolphins hope offense can improveThe Dolphins are having a tough season with the offensive being the team's downfall, scoring only 17.7 points per game. Tua Tagovaloa looks poised to start the upcoming game but he has struggled under center, completing only 65.3 percent of passes for 199.7 yards per game with seven touchdowns and four interceptions. In the passing game, rookie wide receiver Jaylen Waddle has emerged as the number one pass catcher with 557 yards and three touchdowns while tight end Mike Gesiki has 529 receiving yards and two touchdowns. The hope is that the run game can also step up with Myles Gaskin leading the team in rushing yards with only 344 rushing yards and one rushing touchdown for a Dolphins rushing attack that is only averaging 73.6 yards per game.
The offense has struggled but the defense has improved, allowing 25.2 points per game and only 19 points in the last two weeks combined. Emmanuel Ogbah and Jaelan Phillips have combined for 7.5 sacks and 24 QB hits while linebacker Jerome Baker has patrolled the middle of the field with 54 tackles but the secondary has truly led the Dolphins defense. Cornerbacks Xavien Howard and Justin Coleman have combined for four interceptions and 13 passes defended while rookie safety Jevon Holland has an interception, five passes defended, and 38 tackles.
Jets defense has struggled immensely this seasonThe Jets are having a season to forget with an offense that is scoring only 17.9 points per game. In the upcoming game, the Jets will turn to veteran quarterback Joe Flacco as their starter but Flacco has only thrown three passes all season in relief of Mike White in last week's game. Flacco has plenty of options in the passing game with Corey Davis and Jamison Crowder combining for 703 receiving yards and five touchdowns while rookie receiver Elijah Moore has three touchdowns this season. In addition to hoping the passing game can step up, the run game is only averaging 76.3 yards per game with Michael Carter leading the team with only 367 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
The offense has struggled but the defense is the worst in the NFL, allowing 32.9 points per game. Defensive linemen Quinnen Williams and John Franklin-Myers have combined for nine sacks and 20 QB hits while linebacker CJ Mosley has 72 tackles but the rest of the defense has struggled. The secondary in particular has let the Jets down as they are allowing 299.3 passing yards per game and allowing receivers to get open at will.
