Minnesota Timberwolves vs. New Orleans Pelicans
NBA: Tuesday, March 3, Smoothie King Center, New Orleans, Louisiana, 8:00 PM ET
The Minnesota Timberwolves snapped a five-game losing streak with a surprising road victory over the 12-point favorites Miami Heat but returned to losing ways with a pair of defeats. After the latest one to the 5-point favorited Dallas Mavericks, the Timberwolves dropped to a 17-42 record and are in the 14th place in the Western Conference.
The New Orleans Pelicans returned home from a three-game road trip and secured a win over the 12-point underdogs Cleveland Cavaliers, but suffered a loss to the 2-point favorites Los Angeles Lakers in the next game. The Pelicans dropped to a 26-34 record and are in the 9th place in the Western Conference.
These conference rivals met once this season, and the Pelicans secured a 107-99 road win and covered the -6.5 spread along the way.

The Timberwolves’ offense let them down in a loss to Dallas

Minnesota produced one of the worst offensive displays of the season in a 111-91 home loss to the Dallas Mavericks, who played without Luka Doncic. The Timberwolves shot well below 40% from the floor and couldn’t find an answer to Kristaps Porzingis on the other end. Porzingis dropped 38 points with 13 rebounds. D’Angelo Russell led the Wolves with 16 points, nine boards, game-high seven assists, and two steals. Malik Beasley and Jarrett Culver combined for 26 points, while Juancho Hernangomez posted a double-double of 12 points and team-high 12 rebounds. Karl Anthony-Towns remains sidelined indefinitely with a wrist injury.
“Where we are, we’ve got to come out with a more competitive mindset early on, especially against these teams like Dallas, who’s an execution-based team who’s been together,” Timberwolves coach Ryan Saunders said.
This season, the Timberwolves have the 11th offense in the NBA that averages 112.8 points per game, and they are facing the Pelicans’ 27th defense that allows 116.9 points per contest. The Wolves are the 15th in rebounds with 45.2 and 20th in assists with 23.7 per game.

The Pelicans fell short to the Lakers at home

New Orleans had the Lakers in the opening three quarters, but LeBron James and co. pulled away late in the fourth and earned a 122-114 victory. The Pelicans did dominate the boards (52-36), but hit only seven three-pointers opposite Los Angeles Lakers’ 13, in the first game after JJ Redick’s injury. Redick is averaging three triples per contest this season, so he would certainly help his team in this loss. Zion Williamson led the Pels with career-high 35 points and seven rebounds. Lonzo Ball just missed on a triple-double after finishing the tilt with 19 points, nine boards, team-high nine assists, and game-high three steals. Brandon Ingram scored 15 points, Derrick Favors posted a double-double of 12 points and game-high 14 rebounds, while Jrue Holiday had 11 points, six dimes, and five boards. Redick will miss the next two to three weeks with a hamstring injury, while Kenrich Williams (lower back soreness) is close to full fitness and is doubtful to face the Wolves.

“He is who he is -- incredible player,” Williamson said of James after LeBron recorded a triple-double. “I give respect when it’s due. He hit a big shot and it helped them seal the game.”
This season, the Pelicans have the 6th offense in the NBA that averages 115.8 points per game, and they are facing the Timberwolves’ 28th defense that allows 117.2 points per contest. The Pelicans are the 5th in rebounds with 46.8 and 3rd in assists with 26.8 per game.
