Oklahoma City Thunder vs. New Orleans Pelicans
NBA: Sunday, December 1, 2019 at 5:00 PM EST
After losing three in a row the Thunder have won two of their last three games. This is the 2nd game of a home and away series and the Thunder beat the Pelicans at home in their last game. Oh, how times have changed, as OKC is tied with the San Antonio Spurs for the 4th fewest wins in the Western Conference one game up on the Pelicans.
After winning three in a row the Pelicans have lost their last four games. Four of their last five games have been on the road and they had won three straight at home, including beating the L.A. Clippers, before losing their last home game. New Orleans has a high scoring team, but they are at the bottom of the West mainly because of a defense that ranks 2nd to last in the league giving up an average of 119.5 ppg.
The Thunder have already beaten the Pelicans twice this season.
Schroder Comes Up BigIn the Thunder’s last game, they beat the Pelicans in OKC 109-104 with Dennis Schroder coming up big off the bench with 12 points in the 4th quarter and he scored 25 points in the game.
They shot a better FG% and 3-pt FG% and had fewer turnovers. The Thunder have been pretty good at home on the season but are only 1-7 on the road this season with their only road win recently facing a Golden State Warriors team that is tied with two other teams for the fewest wins in the league.
The Thunder have four players averaging in double figures with all four averaging at least 15 ppg. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (18.3 ppg) and Danilo Gallinari (18.2 ppg) lead the team and even in the win over the Pelicans Gilgeous-Alexander did not have a good game scoring 10 points on 4/13 shooting and he missed six of seven 3-pointers. Chris Paul (15.7 ppg 5.6 assists per game) only scored seven points in the New Orleans game after averaging 18 ppg in his previous three games. Schroder (15.4 ppg) has been a solid 6th man for OKC this season and he has averaged 20.2 ppg in his last five games.
Pelicans biding their TimeThe Pelicans are not off to a good start, but they have also not played with Zion Williamson, who has not played this season with a knee injury and the team is hoping he can come back before Christmas. In their loss to the Thunder on the road in their last game they were outscored by 10 points in the 4th quarter and only shot 44.8% from the floor and 28.9% from 3-pt land.
New Orleans has six players that are averaging in double figures led by Brandon Ingram, who has had a great start for the Pelicans and leads them averaging 25.9 ppg. He bounced back with 27 points on 64.7% shooting in the loss to the Thunder after going for 23 points on terrible 19% shooting in his previous game. Lonzo Ball (11.1 ppg) missed the first game against the Thunder because of illness and he is listed as questionable for this game. New Orleans has the offense, but their defense has been their main issue and at least facing the Thunder again they are not going up against a high scoring team. On the season the Pelicans are 4-5 at home.
