The Southern Miss Golden Eagles will travel to Johnny “Red” Floyd Stadium on Saturday afternoon in a Conference USA matchup. The Golden Eagles are sitting at 1-6 (1-2) this year and are coming off a 34-0 home loss to the UAB Blazers two weeks ago. Freshman quarterback Jake Lange went just 3-of-10 for 18 yards in that game. The Blue Raiders are 3-4 (1-2) so far and are coming off a 44-13 road win over the UConn Huskies. Junior quarterback Chase Cunningham finished going 25-of-36 for 297 yards with four touchdowns.

These teams seem to be on separate tiers this season as the numbers indicate that. Let’s take a deeper dive into Southern Miss and Middle Tennessee to determine where we should be placing our wagers.

Improvements Needed

The Southern Miss Golden Eagles have been struggling offensively this season with freshman Jake Lange calling the shots at quarterback. So far this season, he has a brutal 20.9 QBR while completing 59 percent of his passes for 561 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions. In his previous game against the UAB Blazers, Lange finished going just 3-of-10 for 18 yards. If he wants to keep the starting quarterback spot, he needs to improve fast. Lange is also listed as questionable due to an ankle injury. Third-string Trey Lowe (232 yds passing) is out indefinitely. Ty Keyes (355 yds) could be the starter if Lange can't go.

The Southern Miss Golden Eagles have been struggling defensively this year as they are giving up 28.4 points per game. In their previous game against the UAB Blazers, they allowed 34 points on 388 total yards of offense (165 passing, 223 rushing). The Blazers struggled on third down as they went 5-of-13 on third-down attempts and converted their only fourth-down attempt. The Blazers were able to run the ball as they finished rushing for 5.3 yards per attempt. If they can figure out how to get some

Cunning From Cunningham

The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders have been doing well offensively as junior quarterback Chase Cunningham has been doing pretty well this season. So far this season, he has a 62.8 QBR while completing 62.7 percent of his passes for 1,270 yards with 16 touchdowns compared to two interceptions through the air and 43 carries for 123 yards (2.9 yards per rush) without finding the end zone on the ground. In his previous game against the UConn Huskies, he finished going 25-of-36 for 297 yards with four touchdowns. If he can continue to throw the ball well, it will be a great spot for him.

The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders have been struggling on the defensive side of the ball as they are allowing 28.7 points per game. In their previous game against the UConn Huskies, they gave up 13 points on 304 total yards of offense (237 passing, 67 rushing). The Huskies struggled in the money downs as UConn went 4-of-14 on third down while they went 1-of-3 on fourth down. They also forced three turnovers (one fumble recovery, two interceptions) during the game against the Huskies so if they can do that, it will be a great spot for them.
