Toronto Blue Jays vs New York Mets Prediction & Preview
MLB: Wednesday, May 16, Citi Field, New York, New York, 1:10 PM ET.
The New York Mets will be trying to avoid falling behind some more in the NL East when they take on the Toronto Blue Jays in the second game of their two-game interleague series on Wednesday afternoon.
J.A. Happ, who is 4-3 with a 4.80 ERA, will get the start for the Blue Jays. The Mets will hand the ball to Zack Wheeler, who is 2-2 with a 5.03 ERA.
Blue Jays Trying To Stay Within Striking Distance In AL East
The Blue Jays have been in a slump over the last couple of weeks, and lost their last three series coming into this one. The slump also dropped them to third place in the AL East, but they are only 7.5 games behind the New York Yankees, who are on top of the division.
Toronto will be trying to snap out of the slump and reduce their deficit in the division when they take on the Mets on Wednesday afternoon.
Offensively, the Blue Jays haven’t done a great job hitting the ball, and have a .232 batting average, which is 25th in the league. However, they make the most of the hits they get, and have scored 198 runs, which is eighth in the league, and their .420 slugging percentage is 11th in the league.
Toronto’s pitching staff hasn’t been as effective, with opponents batting .263 against them, which is 26thin the league. Their 4.43 ERA is 21st in the league, and their 11 quality starts is the worst in the league.
Against the Mets, the Blue Jays will be hoping that Happ, who gave up 10 hits and seven runs in 3.1 innings in his last start, can bounce back with a solid performance on Wednesday. They will also be hoping the offense plays well enough and provides him with enough run support.
Mets Still Searching For Answers
The Mets jumped out to a fast start this season, winning 11 of their first 12 games. Since then, the team has gone 8-17 and have fallen to fourth place in the NL East. Fortunately for the Mets, they are only 4.5 games behind the Atlanta Braves, who have the division lead, and still have a chance to reclaim the division lead if they can quickly turn things around.
New York has struggled offensively this season. The team is batting .233, which is 23rd in the league this season. Their 153 runs is 28th, and their .376 slugging percentage is 28th in the league as well.
If they want to turn things around, they will need to start playing better on offense.
The Mets pitching staff has been solid for most of the season. Opponents are batting .248 against them, which is 16th in the league. Their 4.16 ERA is 14th in the league, while their 17 quality starts is 20th.
In his last start, Wheeler gave up four hits and one earned run in six innings. The Mets will be hoping for a similar performance on Wednesday afternoon.
