The Appalachian State Mountaineers play a Sun Belt Conference showdown on the road Tuesday at Cajun Field in Lafayette, Louisiana against the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns.
Appalachian State had a bye this past weekend and defeated Georgia State 45-16 in its most recent outing improving to 4-1. The Mountaineers are 1-0 in Sun Belt play a half-game behind first place Coastal Carolina in the East division of the conference. Appalachian State dominated Georgia State gaining 502 yards of total offense while holding the Panthers to 380 yards of total offense and forcing three Georgia State turnovers. Appalachian State quarterback Chase Brice threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Deetrich Harrington is out, while running back Nate Noel is questionable.
Louisiana was also idle this past weekend. The Ragin’ Cajuns are 4-1 and have won four straight after defeating South Alabama 20-18 a week ago Saturday. Louisiana's defense gave up 387 yards of total offense to the Jaguars and the Ragin’ Cajuns gained only 283 yards of total offense. Emani Bailey rushed for 81 yards and one touchdown. Louisiana led 20-6 at the half and barely held on after being outscored 12-0 in the second half. Jax Arrington, Andre Landry and Carlos Rubio are all out, while Da’Jon Bonnee, Tito Byce and Tyler Brown are questionable.
Appalachian State’s Defense is tough to beat
Appalachian State is 38th in the nation in defense allowing an average of 20.0 points and 364.8 yards per game. The Mountaineers are allowing an average of 117.6 yards rushing and 247.2 yards passing per game. Opponents are averaging 3.6 yards per carry and 5.3 yards per play against the Mountaineers. Appalachian State linebacker D’Marco Jackson has a team-high 54 tackles and 4.0 quarterback sacks. The Mountaineers have sacked the quarterback 15 times. The Mountaineers have five interceptions with five different players intercepting one pass each.

Appalachian State's offense is producing well as the Mountaineers are scoring an average of 35.6 points per game which is 60th in the nation. Appalachian State averages 197.2 yards rushing and 284.2 yards passing per game. Appalachian State is in the top 30 in both rushing and passing. Chase Brice has thrown for 1,360 yards with 8 touchdowns and has been picked off three times. Nate Noel has 511 yards rushing to lead Appalachian State and has scored one touchdown. Corey Xavier Sutton has 32 receptions for 479 yards and three touchdowns to lead all receivers for the Mountaineers.
Louisiana struggling to score
Louisiana is scoring an average of 28.4 points per game but is only 130th in the nation. The Ragin’ Cajuns are averaging 166.0 yards rushing and 229.0 yards passing per game. Levi Lewis has passed for 1096 yards with 7 touchdowns and one interception. With 249 yards rushing, Emani Bailey leads all running backs for Louisiana. Bailey has scored two touchdowns. Dontae Fleming has 13 receptions for 166 yards and one touchdown to lead all Louisiana receivers.
Louisiana is allowing an average of 22.8 points per game which is 57th in the nation. The Ragin’ Cajuns allow an average of 407.2 yards per game with 171.2 yards rushing and 236.0 yards passing per game. Louisiana is allowing an average of 4.1 yards per carry and 5.8 yards per play.
