GEORGIA SOUTHERN vs Louisiana Tech Prediction & Preview

Image licensed from USA Today Sports

Bowl season has arrived and we already have an idea of what teams are playing in each. For many seniors, it will be their last time putting on the pads, and it just makes for some great football. Bowl season gives us some of the greatest memories; even with the CFP now the standard for determining the national champion, bowl games still give many teams something to look forward to each season.

(Late line movements and injury reports were updated on Wednesday morning.)

Line Movements:

The line has moved somewhat in favor of the visitors in this contest. Louisiana Tech opened as a 3.5-point favorite when the lines came out this week. As the week has gone on, the Bulldogs now stand as a 6.5 or seven-point favorite as of Wednesday morning depending on the sportsbook you look at. 66 percent of the bets ATS are backing the Bulldogs giving the points here in the New Orleans Bowl.

The total has dropped solidly for this contest as the week has worn on. After opening at 52 points, the total is now found at either 47, 47.5 or 48 points, depending on the sportsbook. A solid 71 percent of the bets on the total are projecting that this game will end up falling short of the mark.

Game-time Weather: The Mercedes-Benz Superdome is a domed stadium. That means 68 degrees, no wind and no precipitation during this contest.

Georgia Southern Will Try To Claim Their Third Bowl Win in Five Years

Georgia Southern only entered the FBS in 2014, and they are already going to their fourth bowl game. I personally feel like I never paid much attention to Georgia Southern before this year, where for me at least, it felt like they came out of nowhere. Although that is not the case, this team has been grinding for years, and the season they had this year shows that. This offense will be without starting QB Shai Werts and back-up QB Justin Tomlin. Werts is the team rushing leader in their option attack. Currently, Georgia Southern averages 262.4 rushing YPG (5th) to lead the Sun Belt and scores 26.3 PPG (82nd). Without Werts, though, I see a lot of this team’s production going down. Josh Tomlin was their starter in their last game on Dec. 12 against Appalachian State and he rushed for 76 yards. However, Tomlin was injured in the second quarter and Miller Mosley took over. Mosley threw for a TD and two picks in replacing Tomlin, who is listed as questionable for this game with an ankle injury.

On defense, Georgia Southern has had a solid year. At the end of the regular season, they are allowing opponents to only score 22.3 PPG (31st) while only giving up a total of 333.5 YPG (22nd). This squad also has 14 takeaways on the year (6th). I expect them to give LA Tech’s offense some trouble.

Georgia Southern Injury Report:

King, OL Jarrod Leeds, QB Will Lovett Jr., OL Lawson Maxwell, CB Jaden Moreland, S Austin Parker, DE Traver Vliem, WR Jallah Zeze Jr.

Doubtful: QB Shai Werts

Questionable: QB Justin Tomlin, DE A.J. Watkins

Louisiana Tech Looks to Finish Off an Average Season With a Bowl Win

Louisiana Tech had a worse year than the past few, but with COVID-19 this year as a 4-4 team, they were able to receive a bowl bid. I mean, in any other year, their season would already be over, and they know that. This will lead them to come out and really leave it all out on the field to prove they deserved this game. LA Tech has struggled this year offensively averaging 325.1 total YPG (114th) while scoring 29.3 PPG (58th). This team relies on the passing game, and they will have a tough matchup against Georgia Southern's strong pass defense.

On defense, LA Tech has had a forgettable year. They finished the regular season allowing opponents to score 34.3 PPG (97th) while allowing 425.0 total YPG (82nd). The day’s real challenge for this defense will be to try and contain the strong Georgia Southern rushing attack with their bad rush defense that has allowed opponents to rush for 184.6 YPG (88th).
