The Georgia State Panthers will travel to Allen E. Paulson Stadium on Saturday evening to take on the Georgia Southern Eagles in a Sun Belt Conference matchup. The Panthers are 3-4 (2-1) so far this season and are coming off a 28-16 home win over the Texas State Bobcats. Junior quarterback Darren Grainger finished going 16-of-25 for 200 yards with two touchdowns. The Eagles are currently 2-5 (1-3) and are coming off a 41-14 road loss against the South Alabama Jaguars. Junior quarterback Justin Tomlin finished going 5-of-13 for 49 yards with an interception.

These two programs play annually and looking at last season, the Panthers picked up a 30-24 home win to end the regular season. Let’s take a deeper dive into the matchup to determine where we should be leaning.

Hear Me Roar

The Georgia State Panthers have been a decent offense with junior quarterback Darren Grainger at the helm. So far this season, he is posting a 45.3 QBR while completing 60.4 percent of his passes for 783 yards with 11 touchdowns and three interceptions. He also runs well as he has 70 rushes for 343 yards (4.9 yards per attempt) with a touchdown. In his last game against the Texas State Bobcats, he finished going 16-of-25 for 200 yards with two touchdowns through the air and 15 rushes for 91 yards (6.1 yards per carry). If he can figure out how to continue that type of performance, the Panthers would be thrilled.

Georgia State has been struggling this season as they are allowing 32.4 points per game. In their previous game against the Texas State Bobcats, they gave up 16 points on 378 total yards of offense (255 passing, 123 rushing). They did a good job at defending on third and fourth downs as the Bobcats went 5-of-17 on third down and 1-of-2 on fourth down. If they can continue to hold the opposing quarterback to 5.4 passing yards per attempt, they would be in a better position.

Room for Improvement

The Georgia Southern Eagles have been struggling offensively with junior quarterback Justin Tomlin. So far this season, he has a putrid 11.4 QBR while completing 47.8 percent of his passes for 507 yards with no touchdowns and five interceptions. He did run the ball decently well as he has 57 rushes for 130 yards (2.3 yards per carry) with a pair of touchdowns. In his last game against the South Alabama Jaguars, he went 5-of-13 for 49 yards with an interception as well as seven rushes for 14 yards (2.0 yards per carry). If he can play better, the Eagles will be in a better spot.

The Georgia Southern Eagles have not been good defensively as they are allowing 33.9 points per game this season. In their previous game against the South Alabama Jaguars, they gave up 41 points on 545 total yards of offense (405 passing, 140 rushing). The Jags went 7-of-12 on third-down attempts. The Eagles finished running for 4.4 yards per carry. If they can figure out how to get some stops if they want to be in a winning position.
