AL Central action here as the Detroit Tigers host the Kansas City Royals. Tarik Skubal will be on the mound for Detroit here in the second and final game of this mini series, while Brady Singer gets the start for Kansas City. Neither of these teams are headed for the playoffs, and both are playing for pride down the stretch.
Royals Heating UpDon't look now but the Kansas City Royals are quietly picking up steam. After starting the year off looking like one of the worst teams in the league yet again they have rallied recently by winning six games in a row entering Tuesday to crawl back to a somewhat respectable 20-28. As they look to keep the newfound momentum going, they'll turn to Brady Singer on the mound here. The 24 year old rookie has understandably been up and down, but he's coming off a gem of an outing. In his most recent start against the Indians he was absolutely dominant, pitching eight innings of shutout ball while giving up only one hit.
You can see why Kansas City drafted him in the first-round out of Florida in 2018. He nearly no-hit Cleveland, and he has actually been much better on the road than at home this year, so you don't have to worry about him being uncomfortable in Detrot. If their recent play is any indication, he should be able to count on some run support. The Royals' offense has suddenly exploded over the past week, as they're averaging more than seven runs per game during this winning streak. Kansas City's bullpen has also been very solid this year with their relievers ranking 10th in the league in ERA, so even if Singer gets into trouble they may bail him out.
Tigers SlippingThe Detroit Tigers were easily the worst team in the league last year, winning only 47 games, so things could pretty much only move in one direction. All jokes aside they do appear to have made progress, and they managed to go 17-16 out of the gates through their first 33 games of this abridged season. Unfortunately they have all too predictably collapsed during crunch time, as they've gone 3-10 in their last 13 games entering Tuesday. It's too late for them now to make a playoff push, but they'll attempt to build some more momentum for next year with Tarik Skubal on the mound here.
Like Singer he is a rookie, and he's been having a tough time through his first five starts in the big leagues. He enters this one with a whopping 7.27 ERA, and in his most recent start he got tagged for six earned runs in just two innings of work. If he has to get yanked early again here that will mean trouble, as the Tigers currently rank 26th in the league in bullpen ERA. In three of his five starts he hasn't made it out of the third inning. Detroit's offense certainly isn't anything to write home about, and they've produced just 13 total runs over their past six games.
- 23-64 in their last 87 home games
- 18-60 in their last 78 games as a home underdog
- 6-0 in their last 6 overall
