Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to start at quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers in Sunday's opener. The 49ers will have most of their top defensive players back to start the season after many missed several games in 2020 with injuries. San Francisco 49ers have an extensive list of players out injured including Jalen Hurd, Richie James, and Jeff Wilson Jr. on the offense while defensive players Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles, Davontae Harris, Maurice Hurst and Jordan Willis amongst others are out injured.
The Detroit Lions will open up their regular season with offseason acquisition Jared Goff under center. The former Los Angeles Rams signal-caller will now lead the up-tempo offense of the Lions. The Lions are a work in progress on defense and could be suspect to the long ball in the season opener. On offense, Detroit has Tim Boyle, Evan Brown, and TJ Hockenson out injured while the defense is without Jashon Cornell, Shaun Dion Hamilton, Da'shawnHand and AJ Parker, amongst others.
49ers look to bounce back from Injury-Riddled seasonLast season, the San Francisco 49ers finished last in the NFC West after losing Super Bowl LIV to the Kansas City Chiefs the previous season. Injuries were the biggest reason as several players on both sides of the ball, especially the defense saw little to no action. The 49ers won two of their three preseason games. Defensive lineman Nick Bosa is expected to be on the field after missing 14 of 16 games last season due to an ACL injury. Joining Bosa on the defense are top linebackers Fred Warner and Azeez Al-Shaair as well as talented free safety Jimmie Ward and cornerback Emmanuel Moseley.
Jimmy Garoppolo will start under center for the 49ers with top running back Raheem Mostert as the biggest threat on the ground, while wide receivers Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk along with George Kittle at tight end give Garoppolo several weapons to throw to. Kittle is one of the best possession receivers in all of the NFL and will play a big role throughout the season. The offensive line for the 49ers should give quarterback Garoppolo plenty of protection.
Stafford out, Goff inLongtime Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford is no longer in Motown and former Los Angeles signal-caller Jared Goff will now be under center for the Lions. Goff has 42 wins as a starter during the last four seasons which is second to just Tom Brady's 47 over that span. The Detroit wide receiver corps will be led by Tyrell Williams, Kalif Raymond and Amon-Ra St. Brown. Tight end TJ Hockenson is out injured and his absence will make things more difficult for Goff. Running back D’Andre Swift is questionable for Sunday's game but is expected to start and will be backed up by Jamal Williams.

On defense, Detroit will start with a 3-4 with defensive end Michael Brockers anchoring the front 3 along with Nick Williams and Alim McNeil. Jamie Collins Senior, Romeo Okwara and Trey Flowers are the three top linebackers for the Lions. The defensive secondary has one of the best shutdown cornerbacks in football in Jeff Okudah, but is suspect at safety and against opponents with a strong deep threat presence could be burned often.

- San Francisco is 7-3 ATS in the last 10 in Week 1
- The 49ers are 5-2 ATS in the last seven played in September
