This Thursday, there is an NFL Preseason matchup between the Washington Redskins and the Cleveland Browns. These teams will face off at about 7:30 PM. This is game one of the preseason for both teams, which will take place at FirstEnergy Stadium.
Redskins Look To See Production From Rookie Quarterback
The Washington Redskins enter the 2019 season with hopes of drastically improving in the NFC East division. Specifically, the Redskins won just seven games last season and ended up in third place in the division. To make matters worse, the team lost starting quarterback Alex Smith to a serious leg injury in the middle of last season and he might not be able to play a snap this season from under center. However, the Redskins addressed their newfound quarterback depth concerns by drafting quarterback Dwayne Haskins with the 15th pick in the first round of this past NFL Draft. Although this is just preseason, this game could be quite important for his development as he will be given the chance to familiarize himself with Washington’s offense and showcase why he should become the team’s starter in the future. Whether he can actually deliver, though, remains to be seen.
Last season, the Redskins went 1-3 in the preseason. However, the team’s quarterback depth chart has changed dramatically since then with the additions of Dwayne Haskins and Case Keenum so no one truly knows how the snaps will be divided up amongst the active quarterbacks on the roster. However, one can assume that Haskins will only get a series or two as the coaching staff will try not to overwhelm him in his first NFL game.
The Redskins currently have several key injuries that they are dealing with leading up to this game. Specifically, linebacker Montez Sweat, defensive tackle Caleb Brantley, cornerback Adonis Alexander, cornerback Quinton Dunbarand cornerback Greg Stroman have all been listed as questionable for this game and no one truly knows whether or not they will each play.
Cleveland Looks To Compete For AFC North TItle
The Cleveland Browns enter the 2019 season with rare expectations. After a 7-8-1 record last season, the Browns are the surprise favorites to win the AFC North division. Although this is just preseason, this game could be quite important for Cleveland as it will look to find depth to several key positions which could help the team succeed in the long run. Plus, it will be the first preseason game under new head coach Freddie Kitchens who took the job in the middle of the regular season last year. No one truly knows what to expect with him on the sidelines in the preseason but Cleveland is 7-1 in its last 8 preseason games.
Last season, the Browns went 3-1 in the preseason. However, unlike last year, star quarterback Baker Mayfield will most likely sit out in the first game of preseason this year as the Browns will look to keep him healthy for the regular season. In his absence, backup quarterback Drew Stanton is expected to start the game from behind center with quarterback Garrett Gilbert coming in off the bench.
Odell Beckham Jr spoke about his growing chemistry with QB Baker Mayfield.
“Everything takes time. Everything that is great comes with patience and takes time. We are still developing,” he said. “The best part about it is it is training camp. It is not the real season right now so we are all trying to get on the same page and get everything down. It has been a lot of fun working with (Head) Coach Freddie (Kitchens), Bake and everyone else. I am trying to just get better each and every day.“I feel like I should make that catch. He puts it in a good enough place, I should make that catch, and that was the first time we did it. That’s the stuff that comes with practice. Once you get on the same page, I just feel like it’s going to be scary.’’
The Browns currently have several key injuries that they are dealing with leading up to this game. Specifically, defensive tackle Brian Price, defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson, cornerback Phillip Gaines, linebacker Genard Averyand linebacker Adarius Taylor have all been listed as questionable for this game and no one truly knows whether or not they will each play.
- Browns are 9-20 ATS in their last 29 home games.
- Washington has gone 9-7-0 ATS in its last 16 games
