The National League West meets the National League Central on Sunday afternoon as the Arizona Diamondbacks rumble with the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati, Ohio in the final game of a three-game set. The Reds took game one by a score of 3-0. Pitching Probables: The Diamondbacks will send out Zack Godley (12-6, 4.35 ERA) and he will be opposed by Luis Castillo (6-9, 4.91 ERA).

Diamondbacks Left Something On The Plane

That would be their offense. It just didn’t show up in game one of this series as the Reds won by a score of 3-0. The Diamondbacks were able to muster just four hits against one of the worst staffs in the league. That just can’t happen for a tea that is fighting for a division title or at the very least a wildcard slot. As of this writing, the Diamondbacks are sitting in a first-place tie with the Dodgers in the National League West. They have been mediocre of late as they have gone just 4-4 in their last eight games as they enter play on Saturday. The offense wasted a solid effort from Clay Buchholz in the 3-0 loss. In that game, he allowed three runs (two earned) on eight hits and two walks in 7.0 innings of work to fall to 5-2 with a 2.67 ERA on the year. He still, has been hot as he has gone 4-1 with a 2.25 ERA over his last six starts. Arizona has averaged 4.29 rpg and has allowed 3.77 rpg on the road.
Getting the nod for the Diamondbacks will be Zack Godley and he has gone 12-6 with a 4.35 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP in 23 games (22 starts) on the year, including 6-4 with a 5.46 ERA and a 1.66 WHIP in 12 starts on the road. In his career, he has gone 15-12 with a 4.19 ERA in 45 games (31 starts) on the road and 5-5 with a 4.90 ERA in 17 games (12 starts) during the month of August, plus 5-8 with a 5.31 ERa in 23 games (17 starts) in the daytime, while against the Reds he has gone 3-1 with an 8.83 ERA in four games (three starts), including 2-0 with a 5.79 ERA in two games (one start) here at GAB.
The Diamondbacks have been a below average offensive team so far as they come in ranked 17th in the league in scoring, putting up 4.45 rpg, while also ranking 26th in hitting at .238 and 20th in homers with 124. On the mound, they have been very solid so far as they come in ranked 4th in the league in ERA at 3.59, while also ranking 8th in WHIP at 1.22 and 6th is K’s with 1036. Their bullpen ranks 2nd in the league in ERA at 3.07.

DeSclafani Tosses Seven Strong At The Snakes

The Reds are not going to the postseason and they have been struggling of late, but they were able to take down Arizona by a score of 3-0 in game one of this series. Anthony DeSclafani missed most of the 1st half of the season with an injury and the Reds could have used him early on. He hasn’t pitched great overall so far, but he is starting to turn things around. He allowed just three hits and no walks while striking out nine in seven innings of work to move to 6-3 with a 4.46 ERA on the year. In his last two starts, he is now 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA. He was 9-5 with a 3.28 ERa last year, so he is capable of being the ace of this staff. The Reds have nine hits total in the game and got RBIs from Billy Hamilton and Eugenio Suarez. The Reds will enter their game on Saturday at 14 games under .500 and 16.5 games out of first in the National League Central. The Reds have averaged 4.67 rpg and have allowed 5.10 rpg here at home for the year.
The Reds will trot out Luis Castillo and he has gone 6-9 with a 4.91 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP in 23 starts on the year, including 4-3 with a 3.55 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP in 10 starts here at home. In his career, he has gone 4-7 with a 3.48 ERA in 17 starts here at Great American Ballpark and 0-4 with a 2.85 ERA in six starts during the month of August, plus 5-8 with a 4.32 ERA in 19 day starts, while against the Diamondbacks he has gone 1-2 with a 4.08 ERA in three starts.
Cincinnati has been a decent team on offense so far as they rank 13th in the league in scoring, putting up 4.56 rpg, while also ranking 4th in hitting at .257 and 22nd in homers with 119. On the mound, they have been poor so far as they come in ranked 24th in the league in ERA at 4.68, while also ranking 27th in WHIP at 1.42 and 26th in K’s with 877. The pen is ranked 16th in the league with a 4.09 ERA
