Although Detroit gave up 464 yards of total offense to Washington, the Lions were able to hold off a fourth-quarter rally by the Football Team and pull out the victory on a 59-yard field goal by Matt Prater as time ran out.
Carolina is 3-7 after losing 46-23 last Sunday to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Carolina is in last place in the NFC South. The Panthers continue to have major problems with injuries as running back Christian McCaffrey is expected to miss his second straight game and quarterback Teddy Bridgewater is questionable after missing practice on Wednesday with a sprained knee. In addition, left tackle Russell Okung and cornerback Donte Jackson are also expected to miss Sunday's game with the Lions
Detroit giving up too many pointsDetroit gave up 17 points in the 4th quarter to Washington and was nearly defeated last Sunday before a last-second field goal saved the day. Opponents are averaging 4.7 yards per carry against the Lions defense. The leading tackler for Detroit is Jamie Collins Sr. The linebacker has 68 total tackles with 39 solo and 29 assisted. The Lions pass rush is led by defensive end Romeo Okwara, who has six quarterback sacks and the interception leader for the Lions is safety Duron Harmon with two.
The Lions offense has not been able to keep up with the number of points the defense allows. Detroit is scoring an average of 25.2 points per game which is 16th in the NFL. Panthers injuries mountingChristian McCaffrey has already missed seven games this season and the Panthers running back is expected to miss Sunday's game with the Lions due to a shoulder injury. Teddy Bridgewater is listed as doubtful with a sprained knee and even if the Panthers quarterback plays he will not be 100%. With all the injuries the Panthers have suffered on the offensive side of the ball, Carolina is scoring an average of just 23.3 points per game which is 21st in the league. The Panthers are averaging 105.4 yards per game on the ground and 245.6 yards per game passing. Bridgewater has 2552 yards passing, 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions. The Carolina quarterback has been sacked 19 times. Mike Davis has rushed for 385 yards and two touchdowns while replacing McCaffrey. Wide receiver Robby Anderson has a team-leading 772 yards receiving and one touchdown.
Carolina's defense has also suffered injuries as defensive end Stephen Weatherly is out indefinitely with a finger injury and linebacker Adarius Taylor is also out indefinitely with an undisclosed injury.
