The tilt between Brazil and Mexico was somewhat expected, considering that the Selecao topped the Group E, while the El Tri finished 2nd in Group F. Both teams have had some ups and downs throughout the group stage, but managed to find the right form when needed in order to reach the knock-out stages.
After the unexpected draw in the opening game, Brazil recorded two wins but failed to display spectacular performances, while on the other side, Mexico recorded two wins in their first two games, only to totally disappoint against Sweden in the last game. The game will be played at the Cosmos Arena in Samara with the kick-off set for 10:00 AM ET.
Brazil vs. Mexico
Three-Way: 1: Brazil -196; X: +338 Draw; 2: Mexico +659
Spread -1: Brazil -113; Mexico +104
Total 2.5 goals: Over -110; Under -105
Brazil has managed to win 7 points in the group stage, enough to finish at the top of the Group E, which was expected prior to the World Cup kick-off. Their toughest game was also their first game of the tournament when they recorded only a 1:1 draw against Switzerland. Still, there was no room for the Selecao, who went on to record two straight 2:0 wins, first against the outsider of the group, Costa Rica, in what proved to be a very tough game as Coutinho and Neymar secured the victory in stoppage time, and later on against Serbia, with Paulinho and Tiago Silva finding the net.
The win against the Eagles did not come without a price, as Marcelo suffered an injury and is expected to sit out the clash against Mexico. Danilo and Douglas Costa have also been dealing with some injuries, so their status is still unclear. Brazils chances to win the World Cup are now +350, while the Selecao are -150 to reach the semi-finals.
Mexico finished the group stage at the 2nd spot, as expected, winning 6 points, enough to reach the next round. Interesting is, that the El Tri has reached the Round of 16 each time they participated at the FIFA World Cup, but the problem is, that they have, for the majority of the time, been kicked out at that stage. Their odds of reaching the Quarter-Finals round are looking slim, considering that they will be locking horns with one of the favorites to win the tournament, Brazil.
With the Germans playing in a disappointing form, Mexico had the perfect chance to top the Group F and cross paths with Switzerland at this stage, but failed to record a draw or win in the last game, losing 0:3 to Sweden. Luckily for them, South Korea defeated the Germans, which secured the next stage for Mexico. So far, Mexico has played Brazil in four games at the World Cup, failing to score a single goal, which only proves the fact that they will have a hard time of reaching the next round. Mexicos chances to win the World Cup are now +5000, while the El Tri are +800 to reach the semi-finals.
The Selecao have not played up to the expectations and their potential, but the most important thing is that they haven't lost, yet. On the other side, Mexico will look to find their perfect form and finally score a goal against Brazil at the FIFA World Cup tournament. Brazil is the clear favorite in this game, but I think that they will not have it easy against the uncomfortable Mexican team. I expect a tough game on both sides of the pitch, with at least one team failing to score.
