The National League West Meets the American League East on Wednesday evening as the Colorado Rockies grapple with the Boston Red Sox. This is game two of a two-game series from Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts. The Rockies took game one by a score of 5-4 in 11 innings.
Pitching Matchup: The Rockies will trot out German Marquez (4-2, 3.43 ERA) and he will be opposed by Eduardo Rodriguez (4-2, 4.53 ERA).

Rockies Steal One In Beantown

The Colorado Rockies have not had a great year so far, but they have been playing better of last as they come in having won four of their last five games. They enter off a 5-4 win over the Red Sox in game one of this series after they had trail 3-0 after the 3rd inning. The Rockies had a 4-3 lead heading to the bottom of the 8th when the Red Sox Tied it. Colorado then went ahead for good thanks to an RBI single by Mark Reynolds in the top of the 11th. Charlie Blackmon (9) and Nolan Arenado (11) both went deep in the contest, while Mike Dunn (1-0, 5.11 ERA) grabbed the win and Wade Davis picked up his 7th save of the year. It was rather amazing that the Rockies won as they had just six hits and drew two walks while striking out a whopping 24 times. The MLB record is 26 strikeouts. The Rockies are now 20-21 on the year and 6.5 games out of first in the National League West.

German Marquez will toe the rubber for the Rockies and he has gone 4-2 with a 3.53 ERA in nine starts on the year, including 2-1 with a 1.55 ERA in four starts on the road. In his career, he has gone 15-11 with a 3.46 ERA in 40 games (38 starts) on the road and 8-3 with a 3.38 ERA in 12 starts during the month of May, plus 5-0 with a 2.02 ERA in nine interleague starts. Marquez has never faced the Rockies.
Colorado has been a solid offensive team so far as they come in ranked 9th in the league in scoring, putting up 5.17 rpg, while also ranking 14th in hitting at .248 and 15th in homers with 53. On the mound, they have been poor as they rank 26th in the league in ERA at 4.99, while also ranking 22nd in WHIP at 1.40 and 25th in K’s with 344. The pen for the Rockies ranks 15th in the league with a 4.14 ERA.

Sale’s 17 K’s Were Wasted

The Boston Red Sox have been rolling along of late as they have won 12 of their last 15 games to move to two games over .500 on the year. Remember folks, that this was a team that was 6-19 through their first 19 games of the year. Chris Sale was a part of that slow start as he was 0-4 with an 8.50 ERA in his first four starts of the year. More stunning may be the fact that he had just 14 KS in those first four starts. Since then, Sale has been pitching very well as he has gone 1-1 with a 1.91 ERA over his last five starts while striking out a whopping 59 batters over that stretch. 17 of those K’s came in game one of this series, but that effort was wasted as he got a no-decision and the Red Sox lost 5-4 in 11 innings. The Sox had 24 Ks in the contest overall, which ties the franchise record, but again, they lost. J.D. Martinez (8), Rafael Devers (3) and Michael Chavis (7) all went deep in the game. The Red Sox had been on fire on offense as they averaged 8.63 rpg in their previous eight games, but the Rockies held them in check. Boston will look to get their offense back on track in this one.

The Red Sox will counter with Eduardo Rodriguez and he has gone 4-2 with a 4.53 ERA in eight starts on the year, including 3-0 with a 2.59 ERA in four starts here at home. In his career, he has gone 18-12 with a 4.22 ERA in 53 games (49 starts) here at Fenway Park and 10-1 with a 2.43 ERA in 15 starts during the month of May, plus 5-2 with a 3.50 ERA in 11 interleague starts. Rodriguez has never faced the Rockies in his career.
The Red Sox have been very good on offense so far as they come in ranked 5th in the league in scoring, putting up 5.33 rpg, while also ranking 11th in hitting at .252 and 10th in homers with 57. On the mound, they have been below average as they rank 17th in the league in ERA at 4.38, while also ranking 9th in WHIP at 1.25 and 1st in K’s with 420. Their pen ranks 10th in ERA at 3.98.
