On Tuesday, a brand new series will begin between two teams with opposite reputations. On one side, you have the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers, who are one of the best and most respected teams, while the host Baltimore Orioles could have 100 losses by the end of the series. Game 1 is set for a 7:05 P.M ET first pitch.
Dodgers Remain Locked In
Over the course of their last seven games, the Los Angeles Dodgers have gone 5-2 to bring their season record 41 games above .500 (93-52). Per ESPN, they have a 99.9 percent chance of making the postseason and it’s only a matter of time before they clinch the NL West division. Heading into their series with Baltimore, they have a 17.5-game lead in the division. The Dodgers are one of the few teams in baseball without any serious weak spots. On offense, they’re hitting the third-most home runs per game and scoring the fifth-most runs per game in the entire league. Then, on the pitching side of things, they’re even better with the No. 1 WHIP and ERA in baseball.
Against Baltimore in Game 1, they’ll have one of their best arms on the hill, Walker Buehler. On the league’s best staff, Buehler leads the team in strikeouts and has emerged as a reliable guy day in and day out. In 26 starts, he has a 12-3 record, 3.28 ERA and 1.05 WHIP. As of late, he’s been even better, posting a 2.93 ERA in the second half.
O’s Still Struggling…
The Baltimore Orioles and losing have been synonymous for the last two seasons and as of late, nothing has been any different. In their last five games, they haven’t managed a single win, bringing their season record to a woeful 46-97. Only the Detroit Tigers have a worse record (42-100) but the team is certainly going to have another 100-loss season, their second in as many years.
For as much as the team has struggled, the O’s offense has been decent in the second half. In 54 games, they’re hitting .256 as a team with a .744 OPS. By comparison, they hit .240 with a .704 OPS in the first half. A few guys are responsible, but no one more than Jonathan Villar, who’s posted a .307 BA, .880 OPS, and 16 stolen bases in the second half.
On the other side, however, the O’s are awful. The O’s pitching staff has the highest ERA in baseball this season (5.66) and the guy they’ll send to the mound in Game 1 — Ty Blach — hasn’t helped the number at all. Blach has started four games for Baltimore this year and almost all of them have been crummy. He has a 9.82 ERA in 18.1 innings this year for the O’s, but his last start resulted in his first win of the year.
