South Alabama looks to go 2-0 for the first time in nearly a decade facing a Bowling Green team that has not won a game in nearly two years.

South Alabama cruised in their season opener and that is a good start after last season’s 4-11 season. They have a good playmaker at QB and played solid defense in their first game and look to win on the road where they were under .500 last season.

Bowling Green was beaten badly in their season opener and that is not a surprise since they were on the road and faced Tennessee of the SEC. The team only played five games last season and not only did they lose them all but their closest game was a 31-3 loss to Akron. They have a tough home task against a Jaguars team that forced four turnovers in their opener and looked solid in the aerial attack.

A Rare Look at 2-0

South Alabama laid a 31-7 beat down on Southern Miss in their opener and look to go 2-0 for the first time since the 2011 season.

In the win over Southern Miss, the run game only produced a grand total of 31 yards but they had 269 passing yards. They only outgained the Golden Eagles by 42 yards but forced four turnovers and held them to 2/15 on third down.

Senior QB Jake Bentley passed for 269 yards with two TDs and no picks in the win over Southern Miss. Jalen Tolbert was big with five catches for 168 yards and Caullin Lacy also had five catches and had 67 yards. The run game for the Jaguars was a no-show last week and while Kareem Walker had 18 carries he only had 26 yards for a paltry per carry average of 1.4 yards. Look for him to improve upon those numbers facing a Bowling Green team that came into the season with big issues against the run and in their opener gave up 326 rushing yards.

At Least they Covered

Bowling Green was routed by Tennessee in their season opener losing 38-6 but at least they covered the spread as a massive 37-poijnt favorite. In the Falcons held in there in the first half but were outscored 24-0 in the second half. They gave up 470 total yards and were on 2/14 on third down. The one bright spot is that their pass game was not bad and they forced the game’s only turnover.

Senior QB Matt McDonald passed for 187 yards with no TD and no INT in the loss to Tennessee. At least he was not picked off and last season was his first at Bowling Green where he had one TD and six picks. Three players for the Falcons had at least 40 receiving yards in the loss to the Vols. Nick Mosley led Bowling Green with 26 rushing yards in the last game averaging 3.3 yards per carry. The Falcons are a team that is loaded with freshmen and they need their senior QB to have a big game to beat South Alabama.
